Also known as chard or silver beet, a variety of beet "Beta vulgaris", grown for its dark, crinkly, glossy leaves and thick white or red stems, which grow in a cluster from the base. The leaves and stems are generally cooked as seperate vegetables, usually by steaming. It is common in the Mediterranean region and is similar to spinach.
